Mad Dog Math is a highly structured, teacher-developed supplemental math program designed to help students master basic arithmetic facts ( −negative ÷divided by
) through short, gamified daily drills. Created by educator Julie Kotoff, the curriculum breaks down numbers into bite-sized “fact families” to transition children from simple counting to fast, instinctual recall. Core Stages of Mastery
The curriculum is built around taking students through three progressive levels of mathematical fluency:
Accuracy: The student can produce the correct answer, even if they still count on their fingers.
Fluency: The student becomes fast and accurate at recalling facts without struggling.
Automaticity: The ultimate goal of the program. Facts are known instantly with minimal thought, establishing a foundation required for advanced topics like fractions and algebra. How the Program Works
Daily Bit-Sized Drills: Students spend only 10 minutes per day completing a randomized set of 20 to 24 problems.
The “Two-Wrong” Passing Rule: To successfully pass a fact family, students can miss no more than 2 problems within the time limit. If they pass, they move forward; if they do not, they repeat the same family tomorrow.
The “Club” Milestones: Students progress through the exact same fact families across three timed challenge groups: 2-Minute Club: Focuses on baseline accuracy. 1-Minute Club: Builds cognitive speed. 30-Second Club: Solidifies true automaticity. Program Levels & Progression
The program accommodates learners from Kindergarten through Middle School across four distinct tiers: Focus Operations Target Fact Families Unique Characteristics Level 1 Addition & Subtraction Families up to the 18s Features smaller 12-problem drills for Kindergarten. Level 2 Addition & Subtraction Families up to the 18s Introduces missing addends (e.g., Level 3 Multiplication & Division Families up to the 12s Ideal for older kids who missed their basic foundations. Challenge All Four Operations Mixed review Designed to keep existing math skills razor-sharp. Formats Available
The system can be adopted either at home or in school districts through two primary mediums:
Computer-Based (Online Subscription): Available as a subscription via the Mad Dog Math Store. It features automated timers, immediate feedback, and progress tracking for independent student learning.
Print Version (Physical Binders): Includes reproducible drill sheets, progress tracking charts, and answer keys. Parents typically place sheets inside vinyl protectors so students can reuse them daily with dry-erase markers.
